Review of Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007) by John T — 15 Aug 2008
I liked this movie a lot, and have a lot to say about it, and maybe if I ever get the urge to write a proper review again I will say it.
I will say, however, that it's not nearly as pretentious as the filmmakers would like you to believe (the summary calls it "a new idiom for life as a 20-something," whatever that means...). I'd put it up there with Annie Hall and High Fidelity as far as romantic comedies go. (Speaking of Allen, he pioneered this film's motifs in "Husbands and Wives," and has been copied many times since then, so don't get too excited about your new idioms, guys...also I refuse to call this "mumblecore." wtf, seriously.) Really a delightful film, anchored by Greta Gerwig's impeccable performance.
Also, props for, like, a two minute shot with a penis onscreen. Seriously.
