Review of Hammett (1982) by Ben S — 17 Jun 2007
I was pleasantly surprised by this, given the mixed reviews I had read going into it, as well as stories of producer Francis Ford Coppola re-shooting most of what was Wim Wenders's American debut. This film imagines author Dashiell Hammett in a mystery straight out of the magazines he used to write for.
Frederic Forrest would not have been who I would have guessed for the lead, but I thought he was actually pretty good as Hammett. Peter Boyle has a solid supporting role, and the cinematography is great too.
