Review of Gods and Generals (2003) by Gerry N — 13 Jun 2007
"Gods and Generals" is an epic film, depicting the Army of Northern Virginia in the early years of the American Civil War, before Gettysburg. Robert Duvall is excellent as General Robert E. Lee, as is Stephen Lang as Lee's trusted right hand General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.
It is the latter character the movie focuses on. Considering that this movie is longer by far than most Hollywood films (it is just under 4 hours), generally historically accurate, and very sympathetic to the South long after such sympathy became politically incorrect, it is a wonder that this movie was ever released.
Thankfully it was.
