Review of Free Solo (2018) by Hardy C — 01 Nov 2018
Whay can I say? Simply has to be one of the greatest feats of physical human endeavor of all time. Trying to "analyze" someone of such determination, grit and mental fortitude seems an exercise in futility.
The film does seem to make a cursory stab at that, albeit halfheartedly, because psychoanalysis isn't what this film is about. What it is is seeing how an artist creates a masterpiece that may never be repeated again.
Frankly the stuff with his new girlfriend seems a sop to romanticism and an effort to make Alex more "human." But no one is really interested in DaVinci's love life or even the womanizing Einstein's.
We remember them because of how they have affected our species. In his own small way, so has Alex and "His Climb.".
