Review of Fay Grim (2007) by Ilona D — 04 Dec 2007
"Why is it that when you say 'civilization,' I hear the sound of machine guns?" I am unfamiliar with the oevre of Mr. Hal Hartley, but after this, I feel we need to become better acquainted.
The quirkiest spy thriller you have ever seen: there is double-nay, triple-crossing, there are codes (the writing on the wall in an ancient language that none of the eminent religious figures can seem to correctly identify, since it is blocked by two girls and a goat in a vintage porn-kaleidoscope-toy), there is trust and there are betrayals and redifinitions of conspiracies in Paris, Istanbul, and.
.. Woodside, Queens. A poet and a janitor, terrorists and spies and slimy officials are standing by. Blink and you will miss the rapid-fire soliloquies of Jeff Goldblum as the opaque CIA agent, which would be a shame as they contain a ton of potent, sly, and timely political commentary.
