Review of Factotum (2005) by Yago C — 03 Sep 2007
The whole Bukowski thing doesn't really appeal to me the way it used to. It mostly just seems kind of tragic and sometimes boring. However, Hamer (who also directed Kitchen Stories) directs brilliantly and Matt Dillon embodies some key (for me) aspects of the Chinaski persona.
Hamer has an absolutely brilliant eye for certain details of the physical environment -- little things that speak volumes about the ways in which people relate to each other (or don't). Best appreciated, I think, as a series of beautifully done, very sad, vignettes.
