Review of Excalibur (1981) by Del T — 08 May 2010
For me, this is still the gold standard for all fantasy movies of this type to be judged. Extraordinary, hauntingly beautiful retelling of the Arthurian and Grail legends courtesy of John Boorman. Epic in scope.
Stunningly photographed. Graphically violent , sexually aware, with one of the greatest soundtracks ever. Superb choice of thunderous classical music by Wagner and Orff. Landmark costume design by Bob Ringwood of the knight's suits of armor.
Totally bad ass. There have been many King Arthurs, but Nigel Terry is closest in look and performance. Same for Merlin, Nicol Williamson's commanding performance, his consul, friendship, and training of Arthur provide the framework of Boorman's vision of Camelot.
His hate relationship and ( hinted at, lust ) for Helen Mirren as Morgana, makes his Merlin completely fascinating. He also has some very funny lines, providing appropriate comic relief. Film debuts for Liam Neeson and Patrick Stewart.
and Gabriel Byrne.
