Review of Downloading Nancy (2008) by Joseph S — 05 Jun 2009
I have read most of the reviews posted so far and can't help but feel that they inaccurately portray this film. The notion that a film about cutting is pointlessly dark is seriously flawed. First, cutting does exist and unfortunately the circumstance that lead to the behavior are even more troubling. Putting a pretty yellow frame around a dark picture to make it more palatable to the masses is insulting to those that struggle with such severe issues.
Secondly, while the film is dark and disturbing (which it is meant to be), it has numerous opportunities to go over the line and become overly filled with blood and sexual content, but resists the temptation to be more graphic.
If you want to see a light-hearted expose on cutting, this is not your movie. If, however, you are looking for a disturbing yet fair treatment of a very difficult topic then I think the movie is worth the time.
