Review of Day Night Day Night (2006) by Matt M — 27 Jul 2007
A simple, but masterfully suspenseful portrait of a suicide bomber. By emptying the film of explicit religious or political references, Loktev mines the rich psychological turmoil within the mind of a martyr-to-be.
Rather than focusing on the morality of her decision, the audience must simply observe how this decision affects an individual. The second act is as tense and difficult to watch as any film I've seen.
Julia Loktev establishes herself as a gifted young filmmaker, while Luisa Williams turns in a virtuoso performance. She's on screen for every second of the film, often performing the most mundane of tasks (clipping her nails, shaving her armpits, eating a pretzel), but she manages to remain captivating throughout.
