Review of Day for Night (1973) by David S — 23 May 2009
In fall of 1999, I first heard of this film. On the second episode of my favorite television series, ACTION, a character is asked, "What's your favorite movie of all time?" His response is, "Well, I must say that I was most affected by the elegant impressionisms in Francois Truffaut's DAY FOR NIGHT." At that moment, my curiosity was sparked. For ten years, I looked for this film, not able to find it anywhere. Finally, I found it...at BIG LOTS!...for three dollars! I bought it and watched it, and I must say that it was more than worth the wait.
Francois Truffaut has created a brilliant examination of the art of making a film. He wonderfully balances fictional story and seemingly real life in a masterpiece of film. The characters are unforgettable and quickly become like old friends to the viewer. This is a film that I could watch over and over again.
