Review of Creation (2009) by Jacob T — 30 Sep 2009
This film is a fantastic exploration into a period of the life of one of the world's most influencial human beings. This is not a film about evolution, but a film about Darwin's relationship with his wife, his daughter, and of course, himself, portrayed beautifully by Bettany and all the actors and actresses involved.
I was surprised by the direction of this film. This is, despite what you may have heard, not a conventional period drama. Too many canted angles, strangely framed extreme close-ups, and a peculiar narrative structure, with much of the story being told in chilling flashbacks and frenzied daydreams.
But if you accept that you are not watching a romance or a conventional drama, but rather a fascinating journey into the gut-wrentching internal struggle felt by a man both blessed and burdened by a wonderous discovery, you will enjoy this film.
