A serviceable sci-fi mystery acting as a showcase for the martial arts scenes. And while the fights are nifty to watch - still heavily styled, but more visceral and less fanciful than one would see in an American movie - they don't always mesh with the rest of the story.

The really interesting stuff, thematically, is happening within the enclosed medical compound. We see that a young girl is in recovery from a horrific accident, but she reappears unharmed but sequestered, and we know that there has been a price for this miracle, that is the central suspense here.

And I have to give the filmmakers credit, where Chrysalis really succeeds as science fiction is how it doesn't look all that futuristic. The technology is for the most part contemporary, or looks it in the case of a significant device.

It's far more compelling when you're not thinking of it as taking place in a fantasy setting.
