Review of Broken Trail: The Making of a Legendary Western (2006) by Nate A — 18 Dec 2008
The Western revival continues. Comparisons to 'Lonesome Dove' are inevitable with this miniseries. They share many similar elements, themes, and of course, Robert Duvall. As great as Duvall is (is he never great in these sorts of roles?), the highlight here isThomas Haden Church, in probably the finest role I've seen him in.
He REALLY sells his tough, taciturn character. The scenery is beautiful, the story is simple but engrossing, and the conclusion is thrilling and satisfying. It's not quite the sweeping romantic epic that 'Lonesome Dove' was, nor does it quite have the memorable character ensemble of that series, but it's a terrific story and a lovely piece of cinema.
