Review of Bon Cop Bad Cop (2006) by Sabrina S — 07 Jun 2008
It might be lacking the action punch of its Hollywood counterparts, but this border-busting French-Canadian buddy flick is a revelation for Canadian cinema. The script is hilarious, and the chemistry between leads Colm Feore (vastly underrated) and Patrick Huard (also a co-writer) is sublime.
Erik Canuel's direction perfectly captures the Hollywood style, but it's the constant jabs at both Ontario and Quebec culture that really makes this thing special. Sure, your average American might miss a lot of the jokes, but it's still a great time.
Being an American myself (but knowing a lot about Canada, having visited many times), I had the pleasure of watching this with an audience in Toronto on its opening weekend. And it's a real shame that it still hasn't been given a Stateside release, be it in theaters or on DVD.
