Review of Bob le Flambeur (1956) by Joe L — 27 Dec 2009
Of the great french heist films, this is my favorite because it completely subverted my expectation of the finale. it has an easygoing style that reminded me of lighter episodes of 'the sopranos.' after seeing noir after noir end the exact same way (thanks to the cinema codes of the period), and after seeing two other french heist films with the same premise, it was a shot of adrenaline to see something that not only found a new tone, but also an immensely clever way around the moral restrictions of the time.
this is hailed as a precursor to the new wave, and i'm very much looking forward to diving in.
