Review of Avanti! (1972) by Timothy M — 15 Aug 2010
As with many of Billy Wilder's classics, "Avanti" creates almost its own language in how the characters communicate with one another. The wit and dialogue is perfect. Humor about everything from corpses to black socks is wildly entertaining in a way no other writer/director could accomplish.
Wilder used much of the same style he had perfected for 20-some years but adapted well to the 1970s, making yet another movie that was ahead of its time is is almost always the case with a Billy Wilder film.
This certainly deserves to be classified as among his best films alongside "Sunset Boulevard," "Some Like It Hot," "Stalag 17," "Double Indemnity," "The Apartment," "A Foreign Affair," and "The Lost Weekend.
