Review of Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) by Mathieu C — 07 Jun 2007
Moving film depicting French children moving on with school and their lives during the German occupation. The main plot involves a young boy finding out one of his classmates is in fact a jew in hiding.
The film achieves the same kind of realistic portrayal of children as Francois Truffait's The 400 Blows. Children here are not perfect, they often teaseand bully each other but at the same time have a sort of deep empathy for each other.
Of course the film deals with the injustice the jews faced during the war but the emphasis is more on friendship.
