Nobody brings the joys and sorrows of everyday life to the screen with as much insight and compassion as Mike Leigh. The performances here by the incredible Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen, Lesley Manville, and the rest of the ensemble are so natural that you just find yourself observing these characters--a long-married couple, their adult son and some old friends--interacting with such familiarity that the briefest glance can speak volumes.
