Review of American Teen (2008) by Bret D — 21 Aug 2008
A decent doc, even though it kinda feels forced at times. The teenagers are playing for the camera at times and it doesn't feel honest like a documentary should. This isn't to say that they aren't interesting, because they are. You can relate to at least one of them if you've already lived the high school experience.
The most touching of the teens are the outcasts - Hannah and Jake. For someone who lived outside of the popular social clique, I personally know how they felt.
Megan - the popular girl - on the other hand, was very forced. The director tried to make her the bitch and then drop a bombshell on the audience to make us feel for her. Sorry, but it didn't work on me.
Overall, this is probably the most real look at teenage life to come out in some time. It's what those godawful MTV shows want to be but will never be able to achieve.
