Review of '71 (2014) by Akshay M — 26 Mar 2015
A tremendously intense and believable portrayal of a young soldiers ordeal after he's left behind accidentally by his squad on the streets of Belfast. The fact the soldier has little understanding of the conflict or the various factions, reflecting the reality of what very few UK citizens understood at the time or, for that matter, to this very day.
The work itself carefully constructs the complexities of the factors involved in the subject matter into an easy to grasp chase thriller (with some scenes bordering on horror in feel). The filming, utilising both digital and film cameras, has an interesting effect on the general feel, that, coupled with some tremendous acting by all the cast but especially Jack O'Connell, makes for an excellent piece of work.
In the top 5 best British films of the last 3 years.
