Review of 13 Tzameti (2006) by Daniel F — 19 Jun 2007
Like Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Haneke, and, on occasion, Anthony Minghella (think: Talented Mr. Ripley) before him, Bubluani make a thriller of the very best kind: slow, mounting suspense, all surrounded by a genuinly creepy atmosphere.
We have no idea what is going on throughout a good chunk of the film: A guy hears about a letter/package, intercepts it, then follows the directions en route to wherever they may lead. What makes this film so fucking awesome is that it makes us feel exactly like Sebastien, the protagonist.
For the first 40 minutes or so, we are filled with confusion, until boom...he's playing russian roulette, and we are shuddering uncomfortably in our seats. Masterful work.
