Review of Z (1969) by Kevin T — 03 Oct 2008
For a movie almost 40 years old, "Z" holds up extremely well. Hardly ever have I seen a movie of this age so fast-paced, so action-packed, so well-written and with such a dedicated amount of detail.
And then there's a fair deal of humour added to the mix, as well. Montand and Trintignant are gold - I can but adore them and their roles in this malicious play of political powers. The sometimes haunting Greek soundtrack adds so much to the atmosphere.
I think in its core, "Z" still has relevance. Democracy will always win over demagoges and dictators in the long run. An amazing piece of cinema - now one of my all-time favourites. When will somebody European follow in Costa-Gavras' footsteps and come up with a new, thrilling political movie with such an impact? I wonder.
