Review of Young Adam (2003) by Matt M — 05 Nov 2013
A story of lost love and lustful sex disguised as romance, Mackenzie does not aim to please in the conventional sense with his uneasy work in Young Adam, an adaptation of Alexander Trochi's debut novel.
Its representation of a marginalised life widely lacks embellishments and this approach very often makes film feel nothing but uncomfortable and cold. Yet, it still feels daring and ambitious in its brutal dealing with themes of deep internal conflicts, and Ewan McGregor's performance figures among his personal best.
