Review of Yeelen (1987) by Andy C — 24 Feb 2010
The is great adventure story in the vein of Jason and the Argonauts set in a mystical and timeless world of Malian lore. This film was made by Africans for Africans. There are elements to this that few Westerners, myself included, simply cannot understand.
Many film cultures in Africa express their stories in a different fashion than the typical linear method used by the West. This is one such film, and if you can try to put yourself in an open frame of mind concerning narrative structure, then the result is extremely rewarding.
