Review of XX/XY (2002) by Cille I — 23 Jan 2008
Saw this movie at Sundance Film Festival '02. Probably the most realistic movie about male-female relationships that I've seen in a while. With its detached examination of its jaded anti-hero, brillliantly played by Ruffalo (before the mainstream hyped him up), this masterpiece is definitely not a rom-com.
To top it all off, the well-executed and believable plot takes place over a period of about 15 years (no small feat) as it follows the life and relationship choices of a man beginning from his college exploits into adulthood.
While these appear to occur by happenstance and have little consequence, his actions and choices eventually determine his destiny. A must-see, but don't watch if you want a shallow "feel-good" movie.
Dark and pensive, this movie mirrors life.
