Review of Werckmeister Harmonies (2001) by Paul P — 17 Dec 2011
This is a film unlike anything i've ever seen. There is a real sense that you're witnessing evil in this little town or village. You see it slowly simmering until it violently boils over. Its a slow moving film and for some it will put them right to sleep with its pacing.
Bela Tarr is new to me and the comparisons to Tarkovsky are valid but he's onto something very much his own. Everyone talks about how impressive the camera work is but I can't help but heap praise on it.
The insanely difficult choreography, the ability to change shadows, the attention to detail, the length of each shot and how the camera moves just blew me away. It doesn't feel like some Hitchcock dare either.
There is actually something being said in each shot, some of it obvious, some of it a little more difficult to read into which made me come back to the film a few times.
