Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Ali B — 10 May 2009
One of the best films of 2008, "Wendy and Lucy" is a lament to our harsh economic climate. In a way, it functions as a companion piece to "Frozen River". At its most basic, this the story of a girl and her dog.
But it achieves greatness in its simplicity. Kelly Reinhardt has a poet's eye for unflinching realism, and has cast the pitch-perfect Michelle Williams as the titular Wendy. And Will Oldham and Smokey Hormel's score is exemplary.
The movie's concern is not on plot, but on exploring modern day America in a nutshell; the kindness of a few, and the apathy of most towards the plight of the desperate. Reinhardt doesn't offer much hope, only heartbreak.
But she makes us hope for a better tomorrow.
