Review of We Are What We Are (2010) by Tibor B — 04 Aug 2011
An example of a critically over-acclaimed film, which got simplistically tagged the Mexican "Let The Right One In". There are vague similarities, but Grau's film is far less engaging or interesting to look at.
The film starts out quite strong, with the death of a cannibal family's main breadwinner, or should that be bloodwinner, forcing the two young teenage sons to venture out into poverty-stricken Mexico looking for easy human targets.
There's even a Lady Macbeth-type sister and a gay coming of age subplot, although the strongest cast member by far is Beato as the grieving mother who also turns out to be the most ruthless killer.
I found the film never lived up to the concept, the cannibalism of the family was never really explored and despite the escalating violence, became increasingly boring to watch.
