Review of Valmont (1989) by Vince F — 09 Jun 2008
The third version of the story that was used in Cruel Intentions. The othermorewell received "Dangerous Liasions" was done a year before this one. I like this one the most. Two rich, shallow, snotty, but fun people who love fucking as many people as possible in the safe pre- AIDS era, make a bet that they can ruin some relationships and corrupt certain individuals for their own amusement but things get out of hand when love starts getting involved.
I like the fact that our two villains don't take the typical approach that Cruel Intentions and Dangerous Liaisons actors did. They were far more layered, manipulative, charming, funny, and I found my self relating more to them, and wanting to hang out with them.
The acting was fun, with slick directing and expensive and nice looking sets that just made me think of the word lush.
The movie is the most grounded version, it feels genuine.
