Review of Topaz (1969) by Rashmin P — 24 Aug 2007
Enjoyable but flawed thriller from the later years of the Hitchcock vaults. The trouble is in the characterization, as you mostly feel little or no attachment to any of the protagonists involved in the story, and therefore the film often feels very sterile.
However, it picks up quite well towards the end and as a whole is a very good film. Hitchcock has an uncanny ability to offer the audience several red herrings, the trick this time is throwing the viewer off the scent by having everything exactly as it seems, which is unusual for a spy thriller.
