Review of The Swarm (1978) by The Critic ( — 08 Jul 2013
Overlong and padded, Allen's infamous 1978 'bee' film earns its reputation via a story that keeps protracting via cheap contrivances and idiotic characters, a preachy and undercooked environmental message and hit-or-miss special effects (shocking, considering Allen's experience and that this was released the same year as Donner's first Superman).
However, the actors try, note going to Pickens and Fonda who do bring some emotional weight to their roles, and Jerry Goldsmith's unsettling yet effective score adds more tension and atmosphere than the film would have otherwise .
