[4.5] If you absolutely had to make a movie about a killer steam-press, you could do worse than "The Mangler". It's based on a short story by Stephen King, directed by Tobe Hooper (the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), and it features Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) in a colorful supporting role.

Hooper does a good job directing this flick, giving it plenty of atmosphere and visual flare. For a man who has made a lot of flops post-TCM, I have to say he directed his heart out on this one. The casting of Ted Levine is interesting, especially since most people will always remember him as Buffalo Bill in "Silence of the Lambs".

Even as a protagonist, he's still a little creepy. Englud is over-the-top, but I think a movie about a killer steam-press allows that for that kind of license. Overall, this movie was much better than I expected, but falls short of delivering any memorable thrills.
