Released in 1943, Pressburger and Powell took stereotypes and broke them. Clive Wynne-Candy V.C., played masterfully and sympathetically by Roger Livesey, is not the arrogant biggoted man that we presume, but is a complex character struggling to come to terms with lost love and a world that is moving on without him.

Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff, played equally as well by Anton Wallbrook, is not only a German Officer but is a man who wounds Wynne-Candy in a duel and steals his true love Edith Hunter, played by Deborah Kerr.

Despite this both men become firm friends, and in doing so transport us through 43 years from Berlin in 1900 to bomb damaged London in 1943. Friendship, love and integrity unite on the very edge of reason, but can humanity win the day? A poignant, moving and virtually flawless film.
