Review of The Horseman (2008) by John W — 08 Jul 2010
The story of 'The Horseman' is simple and straight-forward enough. A man who has just lost his adult daughter is stunned to find that she appeared in a cheap and nasty adult film just before her death - and so he sets off on a quest for revenge that becomes bloodier and bloodier.
What gives this Australian horror-thriller its edge, however, is its stark and startling delivery. The violence looks and sounds very painful, indeed; good doesn't always triumph and is sometimes nastier that the villainy; and evil can be banal and sinister at the same time (like the scene where a torturer interrupts his work to answer his mobile 'phone, and informs his victim that she wants him to buy some more cigarettes on the way home).
'The Horseman' is brutal, compelling, darkly funny, gruesome, shocking and terrifying. If you're after a startling night at the movies, don't miss it.
