Review of The Face of Jizo (2004) by Mel T — 07 Jan 2008
A rare film that does a lot with very little.
The restraint of both the acting and direction enhances the power and pathos of the story being told. Judiciously sparing use of graphics/special effects further enables the film to maintain the feeling of a play while taking advantage of the film medium.
Although it touches on some of the political issues surrounding Hiroshima, the film never loses its focus on real human emotions, suffering, and hope. It is both beautifully tragic and uplifting.
