Review of The American Astronaut (2001) by Marc M — 21 Jun 2008
Your unlikely to see a film this original, kooky and downright brilliant in a long time. While ostensibly sci fi it almost manages to carve out a genre all of its own. At some uncharted intersection between lo fi space opera, Western and Rock Musical.
Shot graphically with simple yet striking light and camera work it also features some of the most original staging i've seen in a film. While remorselessly indulgent the story still remains faithful to its own odd internal logic.
Featuring characters like a psychotic villlain who will kill you if he has no reason but won't if he does because then the reason will live on unresolved, and a boy who has seen a Womans breast. The soundtrack by the Billy Nayer Show is killer and if the film wasn't so good would be worth the time alone.
