Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Andy A — 19 Dec 2008
Tarantino's involvement seems very appropos given the stylish glaze of "Django". Miike definitely enjoys his work and the movie is all the better for it. And while this might be a strictly testerone-driven homage, the movie, for all of its humor and violence, is quite a delectible little treat and is a great introduction to contemporary Japanese cinema for anyone who, god forbid, has a problem with subtitles.
While any fan of samurai or western flicks might not find anything substantially new here, the meditation on cultural dissemination is hard to miss. A good friday-night movie if there ever was one; especially if you're in the mood for something sexy, funny and bloody.
