Review of Strangler of the Swamp (1946) by Travis J — 17 Aug 2009
Superlative American horror film with plainly evident German Expressionist roots. The action is mostly confined to a single foggy swamp set. Tree branches fill the foreground of most shots. Supremely spooky. The camera tracks the ferry back and forth across the swamp, granting the film a lulling cadence.
Director Frank Wisbar had filmed this same story, as "F¤hrmann Maria", 10 years earlier in his native Germany. How I'd love to see that!
