Review of Stonewall (2015) by Steven K — 22 Jan 2016
Stonewall has many stories to tell; this is one after-school-special version that contains some very good acting, especially Jonny Beauchamp as Ray/Ramona. I wish I had this film as a kid. Sure, there is more to mine from this historical event.
But too many naysayers, many who never saw the film, killed it because it wasn't the story they wanted. Meanwhile, gay films are in short supply. And the negative overreactions to this flick will make studios think hard before they tackle this subject or any marginalized queer topic.
(I know I wouldn't; you can't win.) How many heterosexual historical films are not what they could be? In short, I liked this film. It was jumbled, a bit chaotic, and undeveloped, but many of the performers gave it a beating heart.
And the violence and social injustice depicted, even it's small scale rouses and moves. Glad I saw it.
