Review of Sonatine (1993) by Larry Y — 25 Sep 2007
It's hard to believe that Director and star Takeshi Kitano was the David Letterman of Japan. It's cultural equivalent of Letterman starring in Unforgiven and nailing it. Speaking of Unforgiven, Sonatine is very similar in it's de-mythologizing of the yakuza and gangster genre.
The pacing and minimalist dialogue is very unique to Japanese culture however, and may be anathema to many western viewers. After the film you'll either marvel or bemoan Kitano's masterful execution of expressionless acting.
