Review of Solaris (2002) by Daniel A — 06 Aug 2009
A lovely, quiet film that contemplates love, loss, memory, identity, and humanity's relationship to its creator, all in the guise of a science-fiction ghost story. perhaps that description makes it sound overstuffed and pretentious. it isn't. steven soderbergh handles all of these ideas with remarkable dexterity, and he infuses them with such aching poetry that the film absorbs you as gradually and completely as the film's titular entity.
[note: I haven't yet seen the original film by tarkovsky. after this, though, it went straight to the top of my netflix queue. many people say it's even better than soderbergh's remake.].
