Review of Satantango (1994) by Brandon N — 27 Mar 2009
My copy of this film came with it spread over 3 discs. And I'd recommend watching one disc a day, rather than the whole thing at once. Because 7 hours is a ridiculously long time to watch a film. Having said that it is an amazing and audacious film, but it takes a lot of work and concentration, to call it slow-moving would be an understatement. But if you get what Tarr is doing and appreciate his style its very rewarding.
All conventional wisdom would say that making a 7 hour film was a bad idea, and probably won't be attempted again by anyone in cinema. But Tarr had the audacity to try it and it worked.
And no-one who ever watched Sátántangó didn't enjoy it, because the sort of person whose willing to watch a 7 hour black and white hungarian film is the kind of person who will enjoy a 7 hour black and white hungarian film.
