Review of Sarafina! (1992) by Janelle T — 12 May 2010
This movie was not the truest depiction of Apartheid in Soweto (to me), South Africa, but a great attempt. My love for this film was transcribed through "Sarafina" the small village girl who learned love, the appreciation of her mother, had experienced injustices of the ruling system, and her first crush all while enduring the daunting task of becoming a woman in her harsh reality. The musical notes brightened the mood and the mother Africa herself needed no introduction when the drums began to play while showing all that beautiful natural land. I'd trade the parking lots for that any day.
Loved this movie.
