Review of Ricky (2009) by Ryan M — 09 May 2011
Ricky starts out as a second-chance romance film, then appears to make a sharp turn towards a dysfunctional relationship flick, when suddenly it reveals a full-on fantasy. The film manages to do this successfully by focusing on a single detail of the baby's development, and does an amazing, subtle job with effects throughout the second half of the film.
Ricky can be viewed as both an allegory for his mother's relationship with her love interest, and more broadly for the competing interest every mother faces in balancing the demands of her husband with those of her child.
The baby is adorable, the acting is spot on, and if the movie had another twenty minutes or so to really hash things out, I probably would have enjoyed it even more. Never seen a movie like it, and for that alone its worth a go.
Step out onto the precipice and jump. That's where Ricky takes you.
