Review of Red Desert (1964) by Ryan M — 26 Dec 2008
I'd thought 'The Passenger' was his most "suspended" film, 'L'Eclisse' the most formally accomplished, and 'Zabriskie' the most immediate (not necessarily a good thing), but 'Red Desert' may very well take all of those cakes.
This is true filmic poetry... Vitti's story of the lonely girl at the beach is potentially as surprising as Zabriskie's ending or the camera moving through the grate in 'Passenger'... quiet formal tricks and casually related words create a sense of tragedy as cathartic as in a Dreyer film, without the religious overtones.
.. And the color and the smokestacks and the fog and the sound! This movie hits hard and rewards repeat viewings. Highly recommended.
