It looks like a classic Boy meets girl plot...but...it is really about a not to bright guy who meets his female counterpart...a not toot bright girl...and For me it really works well on the backdrop of a middle of america, middle of the 20th century backdrop.
Also a strong film about puritanism and social tensions in the "good old days" of the 1950s. For me, a gem.
