Review of Pickpocket (1959) by Nick S — 13 Nov 2007
About two minutes into watching the movie, I said to myself "this is brilliant"; I don't think there had been any dialogue yet. Indeed, there is very little dialogue and Bresson has no need for it, because he gets more out of someone staring for five minutes than most directors do out of an half hour of talking.
That's not to say one shouldn't listen to as well as watch the film. I don't think I've ever said sound design alone has made a movie great, but it happens here.
