Review of Pariah (2011) by Jovan J — 23 Feb 2013
Though a triumph in terms of black cinema and queer cinema, this film truly has the capacity for a much wider audience because it is the classic story of being misunderstood, but with a character who doesn't feel sorry for herself, and is actively in pursuit of her own happiness, despite the obstacles.
It's surprisingly accessible while also focusing on a particular subculture. Beautiful cinematography and performances, particularly from Oduye and Kim Wayans, who I only know as a comedic actress, so she definitely blew me away.
A definite inspiration for up and coming independent filmmakers.
