Review of Papa Hemingway in Cuba (2015) by Ter C — 30 Apr 2016
Five stars for a realistic slice of life from a close-up but brief viewpoint by a younger journalist who earned the ultimate Hemingway badge of honor - a sock in the jaw. A full Hemingway bio is unrealistic to expect.
Thrilled that Yari stuck to Petticlerc's script, for an eye-witness account. Excellent showcase of Hem's rare lifetime friend, poet Evan Shipman, though not historically correct. Glimpses of Cuban people, landscapes, and music, plus Miami Herald newsroom are satisfyingly beautiful.
Joely Richardson too tall, willowy and long-haired to play the petite and tightly-coiffed Mary, but her facial intensity and wild look in those blue eyes nailed it! Dialogue perfect in depicting a desperate mind and those drawn into his world.
If the scenario is not clear enough to the critic, imagine the confusion in the mind and heart of Petitclerc our reporter suddenly invited into the maelstrom!
