Review of Overlord (1975) by Jason R — 11 Oct 2007
A powerful film that combines stock footage from WWII with the story of a young naive soldier leaving his home to join the forces preparing to invade France as part of Operation Overlord. The film remains focused on the young soldier and resists becoming the stereotypical war movie.
It follows the journey of young Tom without straying into the realms of politics or heroism. By 'constraining' itself to archival footage the sensationalism often present in other war films is absent.
Despite this the tension and horrors of combat are ever portrayed. This films is masterful at depicting the totality of an individual's reality reduced to but a pixel on the edge of a bigger picture.
Really wonderful.
